the bump was having a moment 🎱 I usually get told that my bump looks “so small”, but today it was the opposite. I’m not sure if I’m the only pregnant woman who thinks this, but I don’t enjoy any of those two comments. It comes so naturally to us to comment on a pregnant woman’s body, categorize it as small or big. And maybe sometimes people see it as a compliment to say “you’re not even that big yet!”… but I’d rather talk about my bump without trying to label it as anything. Somehow being told that you look “big” or “small” can seem harmless, but it triggers some worries — what if I’m not ok the way I am? What if the baby is too big/too small? I know people mean no harm, and I definitely need to learn to stand up for myself and put up a boundary, but I still wanted to share these thoughts 💭

Liberia is the biggest challenge on my trip so far. After 4 days on the bike, 160 km off the main roads, dozens of deep mud holes, steep climbs through tiny villages, @sun_is_cycling and I are in the middle of the Liberian jungle. About 300 kilometers lay in front of us until we reach the border to Côte d’Ivoire. Rainy season is here now, so heavy rain falls occur unexpectedly, which make the roads more muddy and fill up the puddles within seconds. The sun, when it replaces the thick clouds for a few hours, cooks us like instant noodles. With about 10 km per hour, it’s a long and slow battle — also mentally. On google maps there are not even names for the little villages we are passing. I have to be 100% focused on the road at all times, no easy rolling, no music, just the next climb or water hole. Just before the sun is setting at 6:30 pm, we look for a shelter for the night. Kind locals allow us to pitch the tent just in front of their house under their little roof. A school is our home on a Saturday night. People tell us about their lives out here, their struggle, how difficult it is to provide for more than one meal a day. We get water from the well to shower, cook a bowl of pasta, wash our clothes if possible — everything in the complete dark or under the Milky Way. I fall asleep to the sound of thunder and wake up the next morning with kids watching me crawling out of the tent. We pack and continue as early as possible. During the day I wave and smile back to dozens of kids & people who seem to be very excited to see our faces out here. I get goosebumps when I see a pregnant woman my age along the road in front of her small house. How does she manage? It’s beautiful — and I’m thankful for all of it. I’m trying to enjoy this. But this one is different. It’s not only easy.
